Abstract

D.L. Turner's article analyses the present international maritime scene, looking at emerging Conventions and other international shipping issues, and how various countries have approached these. In regards to Australia, Turner examines potential clashes between, for example, Part X of the Trade Practices Act 1974 and the proposed UN Convention on a Code of Conduct for Liner Conferences. Turner proposes that Australia's approach to international shipping issues differs from many other OECD countries on account of its short maritime history and the fact it is primarily a trading country, leading it to favour shippers over shipowners.
