Abstract

O'Hare's closing address to the 1980 MLAANZ Conference aims to traverse recent developments in maritime law, including the potential for an exclusive Admiralty jurisdiction in Australia in future, by commenting on the exercise of Admiralty jurisdiction in America and the UK. The author brings attention also to commercial regulation in the United States, the increasing focus on oil pollution, and the advent of the United Nations Convention on International Multimodal Transport of Goods and Hamburg Rules. A number of recent decisions are also discussed as reference points. Importantly, the Merchant Shipping Act 1894-1900 was at this time being gradually superseded by the Navigation Act Amendment Act 1979 in Australia, which was to incorporate the LLMC 1957.
