Abstract
Lovegrove explores the current trade in fresh commodities (including vegetables, meat, and other perishable items), and predicts how this will be affected in years to come as demand increases, taking into account recent developments in container, post-harvest and packaging technology and techniques. Work began in New Zealand in the late 1970s to identify what problems would arise as demand for fresh commodities (shipped by sea) increased, led by the Shipping Corporation of New Zealand and the Auckland Industrial Development Division of the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
