Abstract

In this paper, Cedercreutz considers the origins and history of classification, followed by an explanation of the Rules, what they cover, and how they are implemented. In addition, Cedercreutz points out the dual roles played by the Classification Society, on one hand working by its own Rules and on the other being authorised by Maritime Authorities to work on their behalf to nationally or internationally adopted Codes or Regulations. The author briefly considers the most important certificates issued by the Society also, and the work being done by the Classification Societies to improve on the safety of seagoing ships.
