Abstract

Hawes explains the Australian response to the threat of oil pollution in marine environments since the grounding of the Oceanic Grandeur in Torres Strait in 1970. In particular, Hawes looks at the National Plan to Combat Pollution of the Sea by Oil as formulated by the Australian Government in 1973, and notes the growing level of consensus that the plan should be revised to allow Australia to better respond to large oil spills in its waters.
