Abstract

Chalos explores the events surrounding the Exxon Valdez spill, and the reaction to it by the oil industry (especially by Exxon), the media, the public, and the law enforcement authorities which, for the first time in US history, came into play in a purely maritime setting. Following this, Chalos compares the US reaction and the reasons for this with the handling of and responses by other nations to some of the more notorious spills, since The Exxon Valdez, occurring outside of the US.
