Abstract

Dixon's paper comprises Business Session 4 of the 1998 MLAANZ Conference, chaired by John Gresson. Dixon provides an overview of developments in industrial relations on the waterfront in Australia, and raises key matters of interest. Dixon finds that the maritime industry in Australia, overall, has introduced real change and achieved efficiencies as with the removal of industry employment and the significant reduction in the number of seafarers per vessel.

As a case study, Dixon discusses the Patrick Corporation stevedoring dispute of 1998.
