Abstract

Hawkins provides a brief background to the ISM Code and SSM System, its implications, and how it affects the work of the marine surveyor. Hawkins concludes that both the International ISM Code and the local SSM scheme in New Zealand have brought about renewed awareness towards safety, management of ship operations, and a more responsible attitude from the shipowner and ship manager.
