Abstract

This paper was presented as part of Business Session 1, on the topic of 'Insuring Marine Risks in the Modern Day', which was chaired by Peter McQueen. The second page of the paper contains a short biography of the author.

In this paper, Lean explains the principles of mutuality as they apply to P&I Clubs, and the objective requirements those Clubs have of their customers. These requirements, or Club Rules, require adherence to proper standards and exclude cover if such standards are not met. The Rules are subject to the English Marine Insurance Act 1906. In discussing these topics, Lean draws frequent reference to his company, Steamship Mutual Underwriting Association Limited.
