Abstract

This paper was presented as part of Business Session 4, on the topic of 'Maritime law and the military', which was chaired by Alan Sherlock.

In this paper, Griggs examines the legal framework under which various military assets recently acquired by the New Zealand Government, and other existing force elements of the New Zealand Defence Force, may contribute to the security of New Zealand's maritime borders against an old but increasingly dangerous threat - maritime terrorism. In the latter part of the paper, in particular, Griggs looks at the domestic laws which the New Zealand Defence Force, supporting Police and Customs, could use to defeat terrorism within New Zealand's maritime borders.
