Abstract
This paper was presented as part of Business Session 1, on the topic of 'Ongoing issues of safety quality and security in world shipping', which was chaired by Peter McQueen.
In this paper, Botterill begins by defining 'quality', 'safety', and 'security', in the context of the ISM Code. Botterill explains what problems have remained even after the ISM Code deadline on 1 July 1998, and auditing standards in the maritime industry. Further, Botterill examines the ISPS Code, risks to the marine environment, the possibility of global uniformity on quality, safety, security, and the environment, and the need for an effective management system (as well as training prior to commencing, or early on in the designing of an Integrated Management System).
