Abstract

This paper was presented as part of Business Session 2, on the topic of 'Marine Insurance fraud: what is it good for?... absolutely nothing!', which was chaired by Geoff Brodie.

This paper contains the slides for Flynn's presentation about advising insurers of fraudulent claims. Flynn considers there to be three categories of insurance fraud: 1. Opportunist padding, 2. Premeditated fabrication (claim for something that didn't happen), and 3. Fraudulent non-disclosure or misrepresentation of facts. Flynn provides various case examples, and considers how to determine if a claim is fraudulent or not.
