Abstract

This copy of the address was originally published in Volume 25 of the ANZMLJ (2011). The paper contains both Lau's speech and his accompanying slides.

Lau considers the growth in trade, investment, transportation and maritime-related activities in the Asia-Pacific region which have brought with them an increase in disputes, and therefore in maritime arbitrations, leading to the establishment of two major arbitral centres in South-East and East Asia. This leads to a discussion of some topical issues in maritime arbitration, not only in Singapore but worldwide, especially the topic of third-party joinder absent consent.
