Abstract
In this short paper, Maitland discusses the fines imposed on corporations and individuals under the Protection of the Sea (Prevention of Pollution from Ships) Act 1983 (Cth) for issues of oil pollution, focusing on a recent case where the issue of maximum fines became a significant question involving a ship which was detained in a port in South Australia following allegations of having released oil into the sea.
