Abstract

In this paper, the authors examine the recent adoption of a liner shipping exemption in Singapore, as well as how liner conference exemptions are regulated by the United States, Singapore and Australia. The authors then proceed to discuss the Australian Productivity Commission's review of Part X of the Trade Practices Act 1974 (Cth), the Australian government's response to the proposed amendments to the statutory regulation of liner shipping agreements, and the future for competition regulation of the liner industry.

A copy of the Competition (Block Exemption for Liner Shipping Agreements) Order 2006, as made by Singapore's Minister for Trade and Industry, is attached at the end of the paper.
