Abstract
The author opens the article by recounting the history of European attempts to create a uniform maritime law, from the Middle Ages onwards. This history provides context for the existence and work of the CMI, especially the development of key conventions. The article concludes by predicting the future role of the CMI in unifying maritime law and what work remains to be done.
