Abstract

This paper was presented as part of Business Session 5, titled 'Classification Societies - Emerging Issues', which was chaired by Ross McAlpine. The first page of the paper contains a short biography of the author.

In this paper, Morris discusses the International Commission on Shipping, its origin and its composition, the nature of the information gathered by it, the thrust of its recommendations, the nature of the responses to its report, and what the author sees as emerging issues for the classification societies. This talk follows from a worldwide inquiry into sub-standard shipping as presented by the Commission on 7 May 2001 at the APEC Symposium on Safe Shipping in the Asia-Pacific Region.
