Resumen

This paper was presented as part of Business Session 2, titled 'The New Generation of Shipping Operations', which was chaired by Frank Turner. The first page of the paper contains a short biography of the author.

In this paper, Pelecanos discusses the present role of the pilot, some of the major justifications for using pilots, the major changes which have impacted on the pilotage environment in recent years, and the framework in which the 'new generation' of pilots will be required to function.

Pelecanos concludes that the new generation pilot must work towards raising professional standards and laying the foundation for establishing and consolidating the profession in modern terms.
