This paper was presented as part of Business Session 2, on the topic of 'Marine Insurance fraud: what is it good for?... absolutely nothing!', which was chaired by Geoff Brodie.

In this paper, Byrne explains how to recognise signs of fraud, based on almost 20 years of handling suspect insurance claims, and advocates for the appointment of an investigator to any maritime claim where the likely loss breaches a certain financial threshold, as well as the securing of a signed statement from the insured at the earliest opportunity.
